What is the Special Bowl?

The Special Bowl is an annual event for our friends with special needs!  It was created by Laura and Jay Gibbons back in 2014.  Laura Gibbons (founder and PARTIOLOGIST of Showstoppers Plus- an event planning company) realized that there were not many events in New Jersey that were happening around the Super Bowl season. After discussion, Jay Gibbons (her husband) came up with the idea of honoring the special needs community by hosting an event that brings both fun, and entertainment to special needs individuals, their family, and friends.

 

How they got started? Laura & Jay started their 1st event in 2014. The event had a food truck, entertainment by comedian John Pizzi, an interactive photo booth, NJ’s best meatball contest, Magic 98.3FM and games. Engaging HS students volunteered their time in playing a variety of games and activities for the attendees. The event was a success!!

 

What’s at the Special Bowl?

The Special Bowl is 4 hour celebration which includes music, games, interaction, such as cupcake decorating, performances, talent shows, and donated food from local venders/restaurants.  During one year, Laura was able to get specialty coffees and massages for the parents and guests. Their gratitude and laughter were priceless.

 

Keeping the tradition going….

Every year, Laura dedicates her time (every week throughout the year) to make this event a success by getting in contact with celebrity guest speakers and finding new creative ideas to make this event unique & fun!  Gratefully, we have had  some famous athletes participate in this event. Eric Le Grand (former football player from Rutgers University) helped out one year! We are truly appreciative of his contribution to our cause.

 

Our Future Goals for the Special Bowl:

We envision to grow “The Special Bowl” to 3 states this year and to have the Special Bowl  become a well known event nationwide. We wish to have more celebrity speakers become the face of this special event so that in the future we can have this event happen all around the country! We also hope that more sponsors can help support and fund us!  The more financial help we receive the better “The Special Bowl” can be for our special needs community and their families/friends.
